PERCY AND EVE
This is the
story of Percy. This is the story of
Eve.
Eve
descended directly from the Bible. Percy
still says he never descended at all.
They met one
warm spring day in June. The birds were
singing, the flowers blooming. Love was
in the air.
It was love
at first sight, just like in the storybooks.
Percy felt himself like he had never felt himself before. He grew as she smiled. Within her brown eyes he was
invulnerable. A champion.
Eve
understood pain. She found herself in
it. She was its savior. Kindness was her shield, her temperance and
her example. She gave herself away to
it.
When she met
Percy she began to see rightly.
Clearly. She felt the vague
stirrings of her own power, long clearly denied. Her mother’s mother’s mother knew what she
was thinking.
Percy and
Eve created a child.
“Let’s teach
this child to walk, to talk, and to understand about saving us,” they said, at
least to themselves. And so they did.
They do not
remember the exact moment when each turned to the other with suspicious eyes,
but by its effects they both assumed it had happened while the other wasn’t
looking.
That changed
the water on the beans.
Percy feared
the Bible more than he feared Eve, and that was a lot. After all this time, she had taken his
power. She must have stolen it, again,
while he wasn’t looking.
“How could I
have been so blind?” became his mantra.
Eve made
good on her word. She gave and gave with
no thought of receiving. She knew what
good girls did. Actions speak louder
than thoughts.
The child
grew and became their willing sacrifice.
It was all the child knew.
They all
marched obediently on to the beat of different drummers. Heads down . . .resigned to defeat . . eyes
wide shut.
No-one
remembers the day Percy and Eve parted ways, but by its effects they both
assumed it had happened while the other wasn’t looking.
The child
died. It was all the child knew.
This is the
story of Percy. This is the story of
Eve.
This story
would have had a very different ending if Percy and Eve had really met.
